ADD Finds Relief with Integrated Treatment

Dallas Five-Year-Old with ADD Finds Relief with Integrated Treatment Program
ADD Health and Wellness Center’s customized treatment program focused on the full range of medical and non-medical options

DALLAS, TX, May 10, 2007 – Five-year old Shelby couldn’t pay attention. She didn’t listen and always had that glazed-over look. Her parents worried she suffered from attention deficit disorder (ADD), just like her dad, and would need medication to help control the condition. They wanted to find alternative treatment options but had no idea where to turn.

A common condition in the U.S., ADD/ADHD is estimated to affect up to 7 percent of U.S. school children, or around 4 million. ADD has a strong genetic link so parents and children often share the condition. It’s estimated that 8 million adults have ADD, but only 25 percent know it. Many struggle to find the right treatment options.

“ADD is almost as inheritable as height,” said Theresa Cerulli, M.D., Chief Medical Officer for the national ADD Health and Wellness Centers. “In families, if a child has ADD there’s almost always a parent with the condition.” Adults and children with ADD can be forgetful, fidgety, distracted and have difficulty following through on instructions.

Drugs are the single-most common treatment for ADD/ADHD and related conditions in this country. Shelby’s parents Annette and Eric Miguez were familiar with the medical treatment options, but they wanted to know about other treatment choices for Shelby, including effective alternative therapies.

Based on a friend’s suggestion, they visited the ADD Health and Wellness Center in Dallas. The Center is a unique, one-stop care facility where medical treatment, testing and counseling for ADD and related conditions are integrated. At the Center, treatment tools include nutritional counseling, psychologists and social workers offering individual and group therapy, education and coaching as well as medical treatment.

After an initial evaluation and assessment, the Miguezes worked with Dr. Karen Friedman, a psychologist at the ADD Health and Wellness Centers, to create a customized treatment program for Shelby focusing on behavior modification. Through non-pharmaceutical treatments like coaching, counseling and nutrition therapy, an effective integrated program was created for their daughter.

The Miguezes quickly learned how to manage and modify Shelby’s behavior with positive reinforcement using a powerful technique called the “token system.” When Shelby achieved specific goals in her program, she received pink chips. The chips were special because her mother made them for her.

“The token system is an effective technique because it focuses on positive reinforcement and well-defined goals,” said Dr. Friedman. “It’s like giving a child with poor eyesight the glasses she needs to see. ADD/ADHD children need something external to help modulate their behavior.”

The ADD Health and Wellness Centers’ treatment programs generally involve the entire family, which doctors, therapists and counselors have found to be most effective. In Shelby’s case, Dr. Friedman worked directly with her parents to create the program and coach them on administering Shelby’s treatment in the comfort of their home. After the initial assessment Shelby never visited the Center.

Shelby and her parents noticed an immediate change when a few simple changes were made to her diet and daily activities. For breakfast, protein replaced sugars and processed foods. And Shelby’s day was structured around a programmed schedule so she knew what to expect and could remain comfortably focused.

“It’s amazing to the see the turnaround in Shelby,” said Annette. “It’s like night and day. She is much more focused. Her teachers immediately noticed an improvement, as did her Tae Kwon Do coaches. By focusing our time and energy on this treatment program, we’ve made huge progress.”

Other important treatment components available at ADD Health and Wellness Centers include:
• Neuropsychological evaluations and diagnostic clarifications
• Education and counseling
• Behavioral and cognitive treatment for ADD and other co-existing conditions
• Academic tutoring and placement specialists
• Coaching services
• Support groups
• Social skills groups
• Skills-based group treatment
• Intensive workshops
• Medication therapies
• Complementary and alternative non-medication therapies
• Nutritional counseling and supplementation

About ADD Health and Wellness Centers: ADD Health and Wellness Centers, Inc. is dedicated to individualized, comprehensive, accessible, results-driven treatment for ADD and related conditions. The ADD Health and Wellness Centers are located in Greater Dallas, Boston, Austin and Houston, and more than a half dozen Centers are scheduled to launch around the country in the next year.

Don't be afraid to grab my feed and put it in your Google Reader or even to bookmark it. I have subscribed to many a feed and it's an easy way to increase your backlinks and traffic by making it easier to make comments on various sites and what not. Thanks and don't be afraid!

Free Credit Report

I did a lot of research on credit report over the previous school year and came to a few conclusions. First, to build your credit score is incredibly easy as long as you don't make a lot of commitments that you truly can't afford. Second, and probably most important, make your minimum payments, even if it's only the minimum. The idea that missing one minimum payment and making up for it with a larger payment the next month is a misguided conception. Last, check your score with a free credit report. It's a quick and easy way to figure out where you lie and what you need to do to improve your score. Good luck!

More about Squidoo

I am still not feeling the effects of Squidoo, and my lens is sitting at an incredibly low ranking. I haven't even filled out the payment options, simply because I don't expect anything. Wondering if anyone out there has any way of increasing my Squidoo ranks. V7N has some solid info, and I have been checking it out. Thanks.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is probably one of the most under-appreciated holidays today....because people don't truly remember what it is really for. It is those who have died for us to be able to live the way we do right now. Here is a little more about it. I hope everybody has a safe Memorial Day.

Go Duke Lacrosse!

It's truly great to see the Duke Lacrosse team making a run at the national championship. What I wonder, and have wondered for quite a while, is why those men have never received the apology they deserve from men like Sharpton and Jackson, who were integral in blowing the Don Imus situation completely out of proportion with a racially motivated attack. This was almost the same situation going the other way. Come on "Reverend"......show a little remorse....

Alphabet Fruit

Talk about the ultimate present to a child. This wonderful writer chose to write a book about Alphabet Fruit for their child to learn their alphabet while learning about different kinds of fruit. It looks like a really neat book that would be perfect for that young child who is waiting to be taught about the alphabet. Pretty neat stuff!

I am thinking about switching things up on this site, and focusing more on a "links for fun" type consistency. I find that people seem to be more interested in how people are surfing the net than reading about the writer's life and what not. Some insight would be really cool. Much appreciated!

Digg.....losing its luster

This article could be well-constructed and thought-out, but I feel like ranting a bit. My roommate introduced me to Digg.com earlier this year, and it quickly became a favorite site of mine. However, as it has gained popularity it has simply turned into an atheist/liberal/Ron Paul fan hunting ground. I realize I don't have to read any of the comments and articles made on the site, but it gets really tiring every day to see the same shit on there constantly. Also, the completely inaccurate and offensive statements that compare our President and our country to Pre-Nazi Germany are seriously so misguided and ridiculous that it just makes me want to explode. I realize that liberals are solely focused on complaining, but this seriously is going a little too far. Get the hell out of our country if you hate where it is going so much. I love Digg.....but I hate the Diggers. Make your points, and leave everybody else alone. Is that so hard? Here's a great article on Digg etiquette. Read this. Please.

Get Paid to Post

PayPerPost is movin on up! PPP Direct is a strong response to other sponsored review sites that is designed towards benefiting the blogger much, much more. Instead of sites like Sponsored Reviews and Review Me, where they take up to 50% of your revenue, PPP Direct is guaranteed to only take up to 10%, and 5 of it is for PayPal fees and whatnot. PPP is definitely geared more towards helping the average blogger instead of trying to make mass amounts of profit off of them. It's a good feeling to get paid to blog! Now we as bloggers can have more control over how much money we make to work for our advertisers. I expect this to take off because it is a safe way to control the amount of money we make. Also, it's another great deal from PayPerPost, which has been a great blessing for me in the form of easy money and something worth building a small fortune with. I was lucky to find it and now I will never let go of it, and PPP Direct is just another way to keep PPP in my everyday life. Sound obsessed? I AM! Blog on yo!

Calorie Counting

Are you a typical calorie counter who is constantly watching what you eat, and checking the numbers just to make sure you don't go over? Well, Myfitnesspal.com is giving up a free calorie counter to those who are looking to do so. It's incredibly easy to use and teaches you the right way to watch what you eat. If there is a way to instill some discipline within yourself, it is definitely to do some good old calorie counting. Of course, the best part is that it's absolutely free! There's really no reason you shouldn't take a gander and do what you can to start getting more fit.

Discount Paintball Guns

Paintball is awesome. Out here in Michigan, where there is not a lot to do, people "resort" to paintballing. I put quotes around the word resort because I don't feel like it is resorting at all. I love paintball. I get angry a lot and sometimes I want to take it out on other people. Paintball is the most legal way to do it. So get angry, and take a look at some discount paintball guns, and get out on the field. Seriously.....get angry and get out on the field.

Walker, Texas Ranger

I decided to turn on Walker, Texas Ranger today.....I haven't watched it in a while, and today I realized why. Currently, Walker is learning how to use a jet-pack in five minutes and flew it on to a twelve story building while trying to thwart the efforts of a large group of men who have taken a ball-room hostage. It's a great episode in my opinion, and I've watched this show for a long time on USA. I don't think Chuck Norris gets enough credit for this show; he knows it's not taken seriously. That's what makes the show (to me) so comedic. It is the definition of an over-the-top action flick, except that it is shown on TV every single day. Overstock has a great deal on Walker DVDs. Bring back Walker!!!!

Bloodsport

Walked into the living room this morning, and found my brother watching Bloodsport with Jean-Claude Van Damme. There are good movies......and then there is Bloodsport. I remember there was a PPP opportunity to write about your favorite movie, and it damn well could have been this one. Van Damme puts men like Steven Seagal to shame with his corny lines and awesome karate action. I sat and watched the rest of the movie as if it was my first time. Give it up for a little Bloodsport!

More, and more yard work

I am beginning to really enjoy landscaping. It's something I have been doing so far this summer to keep my mind at peace.....Soon I will be posting before and after pictures of the work I have done....note I have never done anything like this in my life. I am very, very proud of doing this and am glad that it helps out my mom.

Hotel Discounts

In the age of cheap travel, there are always some better options than others. With a lot of family living in California, I am always taking a look through the internet trying to find new and innovative sites that give me the best offers on Hotel Discounts, reservations, vacation destinations and many other ways. Look no further than HotelReservations.com. Their website is very organized and is easy to work, giving you many options to choose from (such as bed and breakfasts, condo rentals, etc.). I like this site for that very reason; it is incredibly organized. You can search hotel, car, air or vacation site with simple tabs on the top of the page. European destinations are neatly placed into a little box, making it easier than trying to type in the funny name of the city you will likely stay in. My roommate and I are debating on whether or not to go to Hawaii this summer, and I used Hotel Reservations to set up a practice itinerary. Boy did it sure do a good job. The strength of the site is its innovative organization and attractive webpage layout. I already recommended it to a few friends who are looking to go on great trips simply for the fact that I won't even need to explain how to work the site itself. A great resource and a great website that could save you a lot of money if you check it out. My girlfriend and I have been looking at going to Hawaii for a while and have been frequently checking on Hotel Reservations in search of the perfect place. There are so many wonderful hotels to choose from.....I don't really know what direction we will take....but I am sure that she will be the one that decides. Anyways, make sure you check it out, I promise you won't be disappointed!

Anyways, Seduce a Celeb will run on GoFish.com over the next 14 weeks. Check out the hilarious video submissions at GoFish now!

A little question for everybody.

I have a small dilemma. I am switching leases with a friend of mine for school next year, and our security deposits are different values. Very different. I have asked him for the money now, instead of in August so I can help pay off my laptop that I recently bought. Was it wrong to ask for the money early? I don't think it was but I would like some feedback on my decision to ask for it early. Thanks!

Phozi, the anywhere photobooth

Phozi Launches Free Site for Graphics-Enhanced Photos

Online photo booths, such as the newly launched www.phozi.com, are an emerging trend.

May 10, 2007 -- Web surfers who are bored with the same old photos on their MySpace profiles or websites are looking to online photo booths to jazz up their pictures. Online photo booths are making it easy for users to create one-of-a-kind pictures and add them to My Space, Facebook, Xanga or any other website that allows embedded HTML codes.

Phozi, a new and free online photo booth allows users to get creative by turning ordinary photos of their friends into graphics-enhanced, entertaining images. "Phozi lets users choose graphics and add them to their own photos," said David Kayo, Vice President of Business Development.

The emerging trend of online photo booths is similar to Purikura, the photo booth craze that has taken Japan by storm in recent years. The booths are often found in Japanese shopping malls, and are popular among pre-teens and teenagers there, who trade and display their Purikura photos.

"Phozi is bringing Purikura to the web," said Kayo.

With no registration or special equipment required, and no software to download, Phozi does not require users to be tech savvy. Phozi works with any kind of digital photos including those uploaded from web cams, cell phones, computers, and digital cameras. "You just click on your photo, and the graphic that you want," said Kayo.

For more information about Phozi, a free online photo booth, visit www.phozi.com

Phozi has a pretty cool thing going with their online photos. I started to use it a few weeks ago and I was very impressed. My girlfriend seems to use it all of the time now and her and her friends do little poses and post them on the wallpapers of their laptops. All you really need is a webcam and a good attitude, and you could turn your computer into your new camera! Try out Phozi, The anywhere photobooth!!!!

Viral Marketing with PayPerPost

I joined PayPerPost about a week and a half ago, and the results I have recieved have been absolutely incredible. Not only have I made almost $100 in about an hour of true work, but I have learned a ton about networking, marketing, and how to build traffic to a website (among many other things). I am spending this summer away from school dedicated to learning the intricacies of the internet, and specifically, PayPerPost's methods of viral marketing. I have made friends who are willing to give assistance to people like me that have a desire to learn how to market online. I recommend PayPerPost to anyone who is looking to learn the new avenues of online marketing. Get on the bus before it's too late!

A fun online quiz

What's wrong with a little quiz action? Nothing is wrong with a little quiz action. When I am bored, I frequent the online quiz arena and am constantly enamored with all of the internet's amazing quiz capabilities. Being the nerd that I tend to be, today I decided to perform the U.S. Constitution Quiz. Call me a dork, but I don't care, I got a good score and that's all there is to it. If you get bored, why not take ten minutes to check up on your United States history? That's what I thought. DO IT.

Lowest Bid

Yesterday I decided that it would be nice to have a BMW. You know, the smooth, stylish car that drives fast. Well, I don't exactly have the pocket change to purchase one so I instead decided to take a different route. I went to Bid 4 Prizes and put in the lowest bid for a brand new car. I've always wanted a BMW because they seem to be the perfect mix of class and power, which are what I have always been looking for. A lot of people I went to school with drove BMWs and I always thought that it would look nice in my front driveway. Hopefully I can come out a winner and take home that beautifully bodcaious red beauty. Wish me luck, and check it out!

Had stomach tests

I don't really like going to the hospital, and today was no different. I had tests done on my stomach today, and it seems that every time I go to the hospital, they work slower, the workers are grouchier, and the waiting room has less and less good reading material. How depressing. I'll elaborate on this further after my next appointment.

What's coffee without a little creamer?

I have been on a coffee drinking binge since the advent of my numerous blogs. My mom finally suggested I put a little flavored creamer in my cups, to add a little sweetness. At first I declined, but I soon decided to partake. What a great idea. Thanks mom! Now I will get her a nice gift for Mother's Day! My suggestions are of the Coffee Mate Pralines and Cream variety. I also enjoy the International Delights' White Chocolate and Raspberry. Nothing like a change of pace by adding a little creamer to your coffee. If you have any other suggestions, please tell me because I am looking for new varieties!

Bug Movie

Every once in a while there are horror movies that will keep you from sleeping at night. You know, the ones that are reasonably imaginable and feasible for a real-life situation. The new bug movie is definitely one of them. Starring Ashley Judd, this movie is about a group of people staying in a hotel in the middle of nowhere. Throughout their stay, they start to notice itches and scratches on themselves. Soon, it feels as if these "bugs" they found were inside of their skin. The bug movie looks incredibly freaky because it literally drives the people crazy until they want to kill each other. I know I would be freaking out if bugs were eating at (and were inside) my skin. Ashley Judd does a great job as the main character, and her gradual turn towards craziness is very evident in the later parts of the movie. Incredibly scary stuff, I know I will be out at the theatres once it hits, and then I will proceed to not be able to sleep at night. Why do I do it to myself? Do yourself a favor and check out the movie's trailer for yourself.

How about a little Death by Caffeine?

I was drinking a Howling Monkey cola the other day, and I wondered how many it would take to kill me, considering it is chock full of caffeine and all of those other buzz-makers that can ruin your body if you take too much. Conveniently, there is a website I found that tells you how many drinks it takes to kill you. Thankfully, I still have 58 Howling Monkeys to go before I take the plunge. Could be worse I guess.

Found a great blog today. My Thoughts, Ideas and Ramblings is a hodgepodge of information consisting of various topics such as golf balls, credit card information and making fun of David Hasselhoff, which is always a good time. Everyone has a story, and Lisa's is an incredibly interesting one.

Went to the Derby yesterday......

I took the trip down to Louisville yesterday for the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby. It was my first time, and it was completely different than I thought it was going to be. When you think of the derby, you think of dressing up, and classy people, and mint juleps, correct? It was more like mud wrestling, naked rednecks and mint juleps. Granted, we were in the infield, but I don't think I would ever do that again. Next year, it is the grandstand or bust. Then, we can actually see the race and not worry about the weird and crazy people that surrounded us.

Note: Gatorade A.M. keeps me awake in the morning

I really enjoy Gatorade, despite what it does to your teeth. When Gatorade A.M. came out, I got all geeked because 1. Peyton Manning was in the commercial, giving New England fans another opportunity to "Cut that meat!" 2. I drink regular Gatorade in the morning, and it doesn't do anything to wake me up :(. I went to my local grocery store and picked up two 8-packs. I went to bed that night, hoping more than anything to get really dehydrated overnight so that I could use the thirst quencher to its fullest. I woke up the next morning at 7:30, and subsequently ripped open my fridge, and guzzled a quick ADE. Thanks to Darren Rovell's Gatorade blog, I know I am getting the proper hydration. He, after all, IS the Gatorade expert. I do agree with the idea that they are mismarketing this product, however, by not just claiming the "lighter flavors for morning exercisers" idea. Instead, it causes a major debate about whether or not it works, instead of just being another AWESOME line of Gatorade. Enjoy!

Jon Swift!

Hey...if you get the chance, check out Jon Swift's humorous conservative blog! Finally, a conservative site with some well-thought out humor.....his post about Mitt Romney and Battlefield Earth yesterday is the kind of stuff I like to read. Especially considering I am a conservative and I like to have fun. Make sure you take a look whenever you get a shot, even if you're a hippie liberal you will get a decent laugh out of this!

Awesome Picture

I frequently change my desktop, probably almost three times a day. Yes...I know. Anyways, rarely have I ever come across an image such as hilarious as this one. It would suffice to say that this picture is now my desktop, and that my days of changing it three times a day are probably over (for a little while at least).

Drug Rehab

Located in Battle Creek, Michigan, Stone Hawk is in a beautiful location, surrounded by rolling hills and forestry. The program is special because they do not use any drugs or medication to rehabilitate addicts, instead they use nutritional supplementation and a good, solid diet. Talk about an innovative drug rehab center. Stone Hawk is unique because they don't treat (or call) the addicts "patients" (calling them students instead). If you are in need, don't be afraid to visit their website and contact them. I DID have a friend who was in need, and got a hold of Stone Hawk, went there for about two weeks, and came back with the newfound willpower to beat his addictions (honestly). Please check it out!
